What is GML?

The Gesellschaft fir Musiktherapie zu Lëtzebuerg was founded on March 14th, 2004.

Thanks to the initiative of several music therapists, the association counts today 25 members of various origins and training, all very interested in music therapy.

Its objective:

Promotion and acknowledgement of music therapy in Luxembourg

GML will use all appropriate means to achieve that goal. In particular it will:

- give information about music therapy, training courses and fields of action

- promote exchange between music therapists and interdisciplinary exchange

- organize conferences, collaborate with international organizations

- support projects and promote research

GML is affiliated to the European Music Therapy Confederation (EMTC) since 2006, 2 years after its foundation. At the annual General Assembly Luxembourg is represented by a delegate of the GML and as such involved in the finalization and operationalization of the European Music Therapy Register (EMTR) with its minimal standards for qualification of the music therapist. For the 23 countries from the European Union, plus Norway and Israel, representing 38 associations, this is a big step up in obtaining the acknowledgement of the profession of music therapist.

You can support the GML initiative by becoming a member. All you have to do is transfer 20 Euros (students 10 Euros) or more to the account of the Gesellschaft fir Musiktherapie zu Lëtzebuerg

Music Therapy, a definition by GML

Music therapy consists in using music to further, to develop and to re-establish people’s physical and mental balance.

It mobilises resources and its aim is to optimise the quality of life through dealing with problems on a different level or through supporting a healing process.

As a non-verbal means of expression and communication, music appeals to people’s emotions; it stimulates cognitive as well as social and creative abilities, which will in turn allow the person to deal with the conflicts and challenges in life.

Due to the different parameters of music, music therapy, whether active and/or receptive, generates intra-psychic and relational processes. According to the respective need, a qualified music therapist approaches these processes in verbal or non-verbal, in individual or group therapy sessions.

Music therapy is a form of psychotherapy. Depending on the various schools and on the music therapist’s own training, the methods used will be based on psychodynamic, behavioural, systemic, holistic-humanist and integrative concepts.
